"Swan Lake" Headlines Visual and Performing Arts April and May Events

RADFORD -- Radford University’s Performing Arts series will present the National Ballet Theatre production of “Swan Lake” on Wednesday, April 8, at 8 p.m. in Bondurant Auditorium, Preston Hall. Tickets are now on sale in Hurlburt Hall. Admission is $15 general public, $7.50 children and free with RU I.D.

“Swan Lake” tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by a sorcerer’s curse. The story was drawn from Russian folk tales and an ancient German legend.

Other visual and performing arts scheduled for April and May are:

• The Harold Little art exhibition features etchings of local Roanoke scenes by noted printmaker. Continues through May 9, Gallery 205, Powell Hall.

• Student Choreography Showcase, April 6 - 7, 7:30 p.m., Albig Studio Theatre, Peters Hall Room 123.

• Senior recital by composer Jacob Clue, April 6, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• Art Student Painting Show, April 8 - 17, RU Art Museum Downtown, 1129 East Main St.

• University Percussion Ensemble Concert, April 9, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• Graduate recital by guitarist Andrew Book, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• Spring M.F.A. exhibition continues through April 17, in the Gallery at the Covington Center.

• Faculty Jazz Recital featuring pianist Wayne Gallops, saxophonist Christopher White, drummer Al Wojtera, and bassist Joe Scartelli; April 7, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

Scottish Voices• New Horizons Concert I, April 15, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center. The Scottish Voices of Glasgow (pictured at right), under the direction of composer Graham Hair, will present new music by Hair and music professor Bruce Mahin. Also featured will be performances by RU faculty David Allen and cellist J.W. Turner.

• New Horizons Concert II, April 16, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center. The concert features the Radford University Student Composers Orchestra performing improvised music.

• “Medea” by Euripides, April 15 - 18, 8 p.m., and April 19, 2 p.m., Pridemore Playhouse. Medea is a Greek mythological character who gets her revenge on her husband for his betrayal. The story is interpreted by critics as part of myths that describe challenges of the pre-Greek “Pelasgian" cultures of mainland Greece, the Aegean and Anatolia.  Admission is $8 general public, $5 RU faculty/staff, free with RU student I.D., $5 for senior citizens 55 and over, $5 group rates of 10 or more.

• Senior recital by flutist Amanda Murray, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• Opera Scenes and Arias featuring the University Opera Ensemble, April 19, 2 p.m., and April 21, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• Danabella DanceWorks, April 22 - 23, 7:30 p.m., Albig Studio Theatre, Peters Hall Room 123.

• Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band Concert, April 22, 8 p.m., Performance Hall of the Covington Center.

• University Guitar Ensemble Concert, April 23, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• Spring B.F.A. Exhibition, April 24 - May 9, Gallery at the Covington Center.  Reception April 24, 5 p.m.

• Ibla International 2008 Grand Prize Winners Concert, April 24, 8 p.m., Performance Hall of the Covington Center.

• Spring recital by flutist Sarah Vogler, 2 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• NRV Jazz Festival Concert, April 25, 8 p.m., Bondurant Auditorium, Preston Hall.

• Radford University Chamber Winds Concert, April 29, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• Chamber Orchestra Concert, April 30, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center.

• Dance presentation. “Eating Appalachia: Selling Out to the Hungry Ghosts,”May 1 -  2, 8 p.m., Albig Studio Theatre, Peters Hall Room 123.

• Oratorio Concert. Haydn’s “Missa in Tempori Bell,” May 1, 8 p.m., Bondurant Auditorium, Preston Hall.

Gallery at the Covington Center – Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. during summer session

RU Art Museum Downtown – Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Saturday, noon – 4 p.m.

Gallery 205, Powell Hall – Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – noon and 1 – 5 p.m. During summer session, 1 – 4 p.m.

The museum and art galleries will be closed April 12.
