NCAA Self Study at RU

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has established a certification program for Division I colleges and universities that requires all institutions to become certified if they are to be continued as active members of the association. The certification process is designed to ensure the NCAA’s fundamental commitment to integrity in intercollegiate athletics is being followed at the institutional level.

Radford University is currently involved in the second cycle of this NCAA Self-Study after receiving full certification in the first cycle in the Summer of 1998. A Steering Committee that has been overseeing this self-study process was appointed by Dr. Covington in the Fall of 2002. This committee, comprised of key campus constituent groups, has been working with five sub-committees to prepare a Self-Study Report that will be sent to the NCAA by December 1, 2003. The report will address NCAA approved standards (operating principles) in five basic areas of the intercollegiate athletics program:

  • governance and commitment to rules compliance
  • academic integrity
  • fiscal integrity
  • equity
  • student-athlete welfare and sportsmanship

A NCAA Peer Review team will visit the Radford University campus February of 2004 for a site visit to assure accuracy, broad-based participation and completeness of the report.
