Women Finish fourth Men Fifth at 2005 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Lexington, Va. - Radford track and field wrapped up the final day of the Big South Outdoor Championships with a fourth and fifth place finish for the women and men respectively. The Highlanders had several top performances throughout the three days.

Maurika Quarles (Mananssas, Va.) garnered first place in the 400 meter hurdle finals as she broke the school record with a time of 58.72 in the event. Quarles also picked up a third (14.72) place finish in the 100 meter hurdles. Quarles will compete at the 2005 Regional Championships in the 400 meter hurdles.

Dena Caple (Richmond, Va.) placed sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.24, while the women’s 4x400 meter relay team finished first clocking a time of 3:52.31.

In the field events for the Highs Tiffany Evans (Dumfries, Va.) tossed the discus a distance of 132-00 which placed her sixth. Evans had an outstanding performance over the three days as she captured first in the shot put and the hammer throws. She qualified for the Regional Championships in both events while setting a Big South Conference and meet record in the shot.

On the men’s side there were several top-five performances. In the 400 meter dash Jarrell Warthen (Richmond, Va.) nabbed fourth place with a time of 48.19. Wayne Gore (Herndon, Va.) placed third and Antoine Woods (Woodbridge, Va.) fifth in the 400 meter hurdles. They clocked times of 55.56 and 57.25 respectively.

Brian Richotte (Berkley, Mich.) took third place in the discus event with a distance of 154-05. This broke the school record and one that Richotte previously held at 149-06. Richotte also had an outstanding performance for the Highlanders as he captured first in the hammer throw on day one of competition. The distance set a new Big South Conference and meet record. Jeremiah Spence (Riner, Va.) placed seventh in the discus event.

Sean McGuire (Auburn, Wash.) took sixth place as he threw the javelin a distance of 158-09.

Winning the Big South Championship for the women was Coastal Carolina with 285.50 followed by Liberty with 230. In third was Charleston Southern (75.50) followed by Radford (67), Winthrop (48), High Point (44), VMI (40) and UNC Asheville (23).

Winning the Big South Championship for the men was Liberty with 200 followed by Coastal Carolina 158. In third was VMI (116) followed by Charleston Southern (111.50), Radford (74), High Point (68), UNC Asheville (50) and Winthrop (34.50).

The Highlanders will be back in action April 23 as they compete at the Irwin Belk Invitational.
