Evans Qualifies for IC4As and Sets School Records at VMI Invitational Lexington, Va. -- Freshman Tiffany Evans (Dumfries, Va.) made quite a debut for Radford's track and field team as she qualified for the IC4As in the shot put and weight throw as well as setting new school records in both events. Throwing in her first collegiate event, Evans tossed marks of 44'08.00" and 54'08.00", finishing third and second in the shot and weight respectively. (view results) Overall for the women, ten individuals placed in the top five, with Evans, Tara Stirewalt (Terrebone, Ore.) and Lauren Diggs (Waynesboro, Va.) posting a pair. Stirewalt finished second in the 1,000 meters (3:21.69) and fifth in the mile (6:00.55), while Diggs was third in the triple jump (10.26m) and fifth in the long jump (4.68m). Other top five performers included Maurika Quarles' (Manassas, Va.) second in the 500 dash (1:21.09), Latesha Coulter's (Woodbridge, Va.) fourth in the 55 meters (7.38), Kaelin Mejia's (Dumfries, Va.) fifth in the triple jump (10.14m), Shannon Brown's (Oakwood, Va.) fourth in the 1,000 (3:33.20), as well as Beth Haywood (Virginia Beach, Va.), Maria Geary (Harrisonburg, Va.) and Jenni Hauser (Joplin, Mo.) placing second through fourth in the 3,000. On the men's side Jarrell Warthen (Richmond, Va.), Tim Dutton (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Mike Meehan (Orange, Va.) earned titles. Warthen won the 500 meters (1:06.56), while Dutton and Meehan won the mile (4:35.75) and 3,000 (9:14.03) respectively. Dutton also finished second in the 3,000 with Meehan taking third in the mile. Tony Zanca (Williamsburg, Va.) placed third in the 1,000 with a time of 2:40.08 with Eric Joyce (Radford, Va.) placed fifth in the 500. In the long jump, Irvin White (Christiansburg, Va.), Ross Bolden (Charlottesville, Va.) and Doug Kemp (Chesterfield, Va.) placed third through fifth. Mike Kelly (Radford, Va.) took home fourth in the triple jump (12.77m), while Dylan Gerber's (Camden, Mich.) toss of 47'06.50" in the shot put and Wayne Odom's (Dinwiddle, Va.) pole vault result of 13'06.00" set school records. The Highlanders next event will be on Jan. 10 when they compete at the George Mason Invitational. |
