Record Setting Day for Highlanders at RU Quad Radford, Va. -- The Highlanders hosted their third annual Radford University Quad this afternoon at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. Radford posted 15 first place finishes and set five school records. Maurika Quarles (Manassas, Va.) continues to improve as she grabbed two first place finishes. In the 100 meter hurdles she set a track record of 14.49. She didn't stop there as she broke her own school record in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.83. Quarles also helped lead her 4x400 meter relay team to a first place victory where she ran the first leg of the race. Teammates Lauren Diggs (Waynesboro, Va.), Tiffany Street (Midlothian, Va.), and Dena Caple (Richmond, Va.) ran the other three legs of the race to finish with a time of 3:56.72. Radford's Amy Gediman (Midlothian, Va.), Tara Stirewalt (Terrebone, Ore.), and Shannon Brown (Oakwood, Va.) picked up first, second and thrid place respectively in the 800 meter dash. Stirewalt also grabbed second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:56.17 while teammate Maria Geary (Harrisonburg, Va.) placed third (5:11.02) in the event. Winthrop University's Octavia Goode tied the track record in the 100 meter dash at a time of 11.76. In the field events for the women, Tiffany Evans (Dumfries, Va.) broke the school record in the discus throw with a distance of 131'03.00". She also nabbed second with a throw of 149'08.00" in the hammer. Patricia Benson (Salem, Va.) picked up third in the hammer going 141'11.00". Patricia Coughlin (Penacook, NH) had a strong day as she had two victories and two second place finishes. In the high jump and the pole vault she finished at the top with a height of 5'03.00" and 9'02.00" respectively. She finished second in both the long jump (16'04.50") and the javelin throw (106'07.00"). Caple was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 17'05.50 and she finished third in the100 meter dash (12.72). Participating as unattached in the field events was Borel Cleopatra who set a track record in the shot put with a throw of 56'00.00". On the men's side, seven highlanders picked up first place spots. In the 800 meter run Tony Zanca (Williamsburg, Va.) came in first with a time of 1:58.78. Goran Nava (Castello Di Brianza, Italy) finished with a time of 15.29.15 in the 5000 meter run. Antoine Woods (Woodbridge, Va.) set a school record with a time of 15.14 to finish first in the 110 meter hurdles. Coming in behind Woods was Radford's Giancarlo Maragni (Irwin, Pa.) finishing in a time of 15.61. Radford's Woods and Kevion Payne placed first (55.71) and third (57.34) respectively in the 400 meter hurdles. Tim Dutton (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed first and TJ Tamagni placed second in the 3000 meter steeplechase. In the field, Ross Bolden placed second in the long jump with a distance of 6.79 meters. Sean McGuire finished first (174'06.00") in the javelin throw while Dilyn Gerber (Camden, Mich.) placed third in the shot put to set a school record of 50'10.00"). Jeremiah Spence (Vienna, Va.) set a school record of 144'09.00" in the discus throw to finish fourth on the day. He also finished third (161'09.00") in the hammer throw. Two track records were set in the field events. Virginia Tech's Spyridon Jullien set a record in the hammer throw (207'00.00") and throwing unattached was Brian MacPhee who set a track record in the shot put with a distance of 56'07.25". The Highlanders will have two weeks to prepare for the Big South Championships which take place the weekend of April 15-17 in Charleston, S.C. |
