Women Finish Fourth, Men Fifth at Big South Championships

Charleston, S.C. -- Maurika Quarles (Manassas, Va.), Tricia Coughlin (Penacook, N.H.) and Goran Nava (Castello Di Brianza, Italy) took home individual titles and seven school records were either tied or set on the final day of the Big South Track and Field Championships. The women finished the Championships in fourth with 75.50 points, while the men finished fifth with 55 points.

Nava defended his titles in both the 800 and the 1500 with times of 1:52.32 and 3:52.11 respectively. Nava was also named Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Quarles became the first female Highlander to run a sub minute 400 hurdles with a winning and school record time of 59.99. Couglin won the high jump with a height of 5’06.00, tying the school record and she also improved on her javelin record with a toss of 109’01.00 (8th). Also, Lauren Diggs (Waynesboro, Va.) broke the school mark in the triple jump with a leap of 36’02.75” good for sixth.

Also placing in the top three earning all-conference honors were Tiffany Evans (Dumfries, Va.) with a third in the discus, improving her school record with a toss of 136’07.00, and the both of RU’s 4x400 relay teams. The women broke the school record finished second with a time of 3:51.51 and the men clocked in at 3:17.65, tying the school record.
