Highlanders Men Third, Women Sixth after Day Two of Championships Charleston, S.C. -- After day two of the Big South Championships, Radford’s men’s team sits in third place with 22.50 points and the women are in sixth with 15 points. Day two consisted mostly of qualifying with eight Highlanders earning spots in their respective event finals tomorrow. Maurika Quarles (Manassas, Va.) and Antoine Woods (Woodbridge, Va.) led the way with a pair of qualifications. Quarles qualified in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles, while Woods did it in the 110 and 400 meter hurdles. Quarles time of 1:01.49 lowers her own school record. Also representing the men in the 400 hurdle were Chris Reiser (Vineland, N.J.) and Giancarlo Maragni (Irwin, Pa.). Tricia Coughlin (Penacook, N.H.) joins Quarles in the 100 hurdles. Tara Stirewalt (Terrebone, Ore.) and Goran Nava (Castello Di Brianza, Italy) in the 800 and Lauren Diggs (Waynesboro, Va.) in the 400 dash round out RU’s qualifiers. Garnering points for the women were Coughlin with school record performances in the heptathlon (4th) with 4,160 and a tie for fifth in the pole vault (9’10.00”), Tiffany Evans (Dumfries, Va.) with a fourth in the shot put (44’00.00”) and Diggs with an eighth in the long jump (16’11.00”). On the men’s side, James Nixon (Chesapeake, Va.) and Dilyn Gerber (Camden, Mich.) finished seventh and eighth in the shot put and Ross Bolden’s (Charlottesville, Va.) eighth in the long jump (21’07.00”) picked up points for RU. The Championships will conclude tomorrow. |
