Meet and School Records Fall as Highlanders Post Top Marks at Irwin Belk Invitational

Davidson, N.C. -- Four school records and two meet records were set as Radford’s track and field squad posted several top marks at the Irwin Belk Invitational, hosted by Davidson University. Along with the records, the Highlanders posted 24 top-three finishes, including seven first place honors.

On the men's side, five of Radford's athletes were involved in registering new meet records. Sean McGuire (Tacoma, Wash.) prevailed in the javelin with a record-setting 50.5m throw. Also, the Radford 4x400m relay team etched a new meet and school record with a 3:17.65 performance. Andre McMillan (Newark, Del.) in the 400, and the 4x100 team posted new school records as well. McMillan won with a time of 48.89, while the relay team finished second, just a hundredth-of-a-second behind Lees McCrae College.

Also registering first place honors for the men were Goran Nava (Castello Brianza, Italy) in the 5,000 (15:24.17), Rochelle Black (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the high jump (2.03m) and Irvin White (Christiansburg, Va.) in the long jump (6.75m). The posted one-two finishes in the 400 and 5,000 as Tim Dutton (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Jay Moore (Richmond, Va.) followed right behind their teammates Nava and McMillan respectively. Brandon Huntley (Lakewood, Wash.) and Robert Knight (Tacoma, Wash.) also placed second in their events, the 100-meter dash and the 400 hurdles respectively.

With a third-place finish in the 800, Amy Gediman (Midlothian, Va.) set a school record with a time of 2:16.43. Latoya Noel (Columbia, S.C.) and Patricia Coughlin (Penacook, N.H.) finished one-two in the high jump with clearances of 1.62m and 1.57m respectively. Courtney Hendricks (Radford, Va.) and Tricia Benson (Salem, Va.) placed second in the discus (38.32) and the 5,000 (19:53.54) as did the 4x400 relay team with a time of 4:02.94.

The Highlanders will host the second annual Radford Relays on April 5 at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.
