Highlanders Open Spring Season In Style as Records Fall at Charlotte 49er Invitational
Goran Nava Post Regional Qualifying Mark in the 1500

Charlotte, N.C. -- After posting a record-breaking indoor season, Radford's track and field squad continued their assault on the record books, setting six records in their first meet of the spring. Goran Nava (Castello Brianza, Italy) set two records and posted a regional qualifying mark in the 1500. Brandon Huntley (Lakewood, Wash.), Rochelle Black (Virginia Beach, Va.), Tricia Couglin (Penacook, N.H.) and the men's 4x100 relay team also posted new RU marks at the Charlotte 49ers Invitational.

Nava improved on his own record in the 1500 with regional qualifying time of 3:49.94 good for a third-place finish. He also posted a time of 1:53.38 for fifth in the 800. Huntley set his in the 100 dash preliminaries (10.83), while Black's time of 54.42 in the 400 hurdle finals gave him a sixth-place finish. Black also tied for 10th in the high jump (1.92m). Coughlin posted a clearance of 2.60 meters in the pole vault, the first such height in school history. The final record of the meet was produced by the men's 4x100 team, consisting of Huntley, Jared Saunders (Christiansburg, Va.), Larry Battle (Yorktown, Va.) and Andre McMillan (Newark, Delaware) placing sixth with a time of 42.34.

Also posting top-10 finishes for the men were Sean McGuire (Tacoma, Wash.) in the javelin (7th, 51.84m), Charles Musindu (Falls Church, Va.) in the hammer throw (8th, 45.82m) and Saunders in the triple jump (8th, 13.83m).

For the women, Latoya Noel (Columbia, S.C.) and Coughlin tied for second and sixth respectively with heights of 1.65 and 1.55 meters in the high jump. Also, the 4x400 relay team placed eighth with a time of 4:05.50.

The Highlanders will travel to Raleigh, N.C. on March 28 and 29 to participate at the Raleigh Relays.
