Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships

RADFORD, Va. -- Coastal Carolina University leads the women and High Point University leads the men after day one of the 2003 Big South Conference and Women's Outdoor Track and Filed Championships hosted by Radford University at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. (Results)

In a light day, which saw Heptathlon, Decathlon and 10,000 meter run, Coastal Carolina took control of the women's side after Robyn Ritter (38:20.15) and Lindsey Kozlowski (38:20.59) finished 1-2 respectively in the 10,000 meters in accounting for all 18 CCU points. Winthrop (6) stands in second, while UNC Asheville (5) and Charleston Southern (5) are tied for third and Charleston Southern and Liberty round out the field in fifth and sixth. Host Radford University did not record a point on day one.

In the women’s Heptathlon, Danielle McNaney of Liberty (2901 points) leads UNC Asheville’s Laura Lewandowski (2683) after four events.

On the men’s side, High Point recorded the top four finishes in the 10,000 meters, as Adrian Hill (32:57.78) finished first followed by Jeff Fairman (32:58.67), Niran Pillay (3259.72) and Mike Salamone (33:00.43). UNC Asheville (4) is second, while Radford (3), Liberty (2) and Coastal (1) all recorded points.

In the men’s decathlon, Charleston Southern’s Stephen Schlacter (3299) leads Coastal Carolina’s Ray Felton (3226) by 73 points after five events.

A majority of the events will kick off Tomorrow featuring 10 NCAA Regional Qualifiers headed by Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell who qualified in three events, hammer throw (63.04m), discus (45.85m) and shot put (14.17m). Campbell will be joined by three teammates, Marilyn Testa ( 3.66m) and Mark Johnson (4.90m) in the pole vault and Nick Kenworthy (52.21m) in the discus.

High Point will be represented by Alex Baikovs (1:49.79) in the 800 meters and Taylor Milne (3:49.94) in the 1500 meters. Milne will hook up with Radford University’s Goran Nava (3:49.94), a regional qualifier in the 1500 meters, in what could be the best match up of the meet having both turned in 3:49.94 times in the 1500m this season. Winthrop University will be well represented in the 100 meter dash, as teammates Joe Hall (10.42) and Octavia Goode (11.76) round out the regional qualifiers.

Admission Friday and Saturday is $3.00 for Adults, $2.00 for Students and under-7 free. Gates open at 11:00 a.m. on Friday and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. A complete schedule of events is to follow.

The decathlon will continue tomorrow at noon with the 110-meter hurdles and the heptathlon kicks off with the long jump at noon as well. A complete schedule of events is to follow.
