19 Meet Records Established at Second Annual Radford University Quad
Highlanders Post 12 First Place Finishes

Radford, Va. -- Four teams competed at the second annual Radford University Quad this afternoon, hosted by the Highlanders, at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. During the day, 19 new meet records were set including 12 on the men's side.

On the men’s side, Radford and Detroit combined for nine of the records. Individually, Goran Nava and Detroit’s Matt Groh were each responsible for a pair of records. Nava won 800 and 1,500 with times of 1:57.48 and 4:04.04, while Groh won the shot put and discus with distances of 16.93m and 48.81m respectively. Radford’s 4x400 relay team won with a time of 3:21.09, while Jay Moore and Rochelle Black also posted new meet records with first place finishes in the 400 meters (49.44) and 400 hurdles (54.85). For Detroit, Guy Diakow and Angelo Finnie set meet records in the hammer throw (52.94m) and 110 meter hurdles (14.90) respectively.

Also setting meet records for the men were Charleston Southern’s Chris Ward in the 200 with a time of 21.27 and their 4x100 relay team with a time of 41.92. The final record was set by Nat Breland in the 100 (10.34), running unattached.

For the men, Shawn McGuire and Tim Dutton placed first in the javelin (47.90m) and steeplechase (10:18.93) respectively. Other top finishes for the Highlanders, were seconds posted by the 4x100 relay team, Larry Battle in the 400, Robert Knight in the 400 hurdles, Rochelle Black in the high jump and Brandon Huntley in the triple jump. Also for RU, Irivin White finished third in the long and triple jump. Huntley also broke his own school record with a 10.80 and fourth place finish in the 100 meters.

On the women’s side, Winthrop University was responsible for four of the seven records established. Stephanie Vangnes led the Lady Eagles with wins in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. She posted meet record times of 4:37.32 and 10:22.77 respectively. Octavia Goode in the 100 dash and Winthrop’s 4x400 relay team also set meet records.

The final three records were set by Radford’s 4x100 relay team, Detroit’s Andrea Karpala in the hammer throw and Charleston Southern’s Audrika Godson in the high jump.

For the Highlanders, Latesha Coulter, Kwadena Caple, Amy Gediman and Latoya Noel posted wins in the 200, 400, 800 and 400 hurdles respectively. Other top finishes for Radford were seconds in the high jump and 200, by Noel and Natasha Tyler respectively, and by the 4x400 relay team. Tara Stirewalt was third in the 800 and 1500.
