Terebey, Nava Named RU Scholar Athletes of the Year as 150 RU Student-Athletes Honored at 10th Annual Academic Achievement Banquet

RADFORD, Va. - Radford University announced their 2001-02 Student-Athletes of the year at the school’s 10th Annual Academic Achievement banquet. Golfer Laura Terebey was named 2001-02 Female Student-Athlete of the Year, while Track and Field/Cross Country star Goran Nava was named 2001-02 Male Student Athlete of the Year.

Female Student-Athlete of-the-Year
Terebey, a native of Greensboro, Md. entered the Big South Conference Championship, with a 75.5 stroke average in four tournaments this spring. She placed third or higher in four tournaments this spring, including winning two consecutive tournaments, the Lady Pirate Spring Golf Classic and the Elon University Intercollegiate. During her run in those victories, she became the first player in Radford history to fire back-to-back sub-par rounds.

She is the 2001 BSC Rookie-of-the-Year and finished second as a freshman at the 2001 BSC Golf Championship, to teammate Stephanie George.

Coach Matt Sutphin has this to say about her, “She is a team leader and leads by example. She has unlimited potential both as a student and a player. She is an extremely hard worker, playing for all the right reasons, because she enjoys the game.”

Terebey holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the field of business.

Male Student-Athlete of-the-Year
Goran Nava, a native of Castello Brianza, Italy, was named to the Big South Conference all-Academic team for Men’s Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field. He earned 2001-02 Big South Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors this season. In Cross-Country, he captured the Gardener Webb Invitational title and finished second at the George Washington Invitational.

During the indoor season, he was entered as the top runner in the 800 meters and the second seed in the 1500 meters, capping off his indoor season by winning both events in the BSC indoor championships. This spring, in outdoors, he is ranked third in both the 800 and 1500 and set a new school record in the 1500 with a time of 3:53.14.

Assistant Coach Tom Morris has this to say about him, “Goran has demonstrated a wonderful attitude as he continues the transition from the Italian system of education and training. Goran has a fine understanding of English, while his limited knowledge of our local colloquialisms has created many humorous moments for his teammates. He is very mature in setting goals for academics, athletics and his career in filmmaking. He has become a “model student-athlete”; meticulous in preparation from theory to practice,” added Morris.

He currently has a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the field of management.
