Highs Slide Behind Dukes
RADFORD, Va. - Radford swimming and diving slide behind James Madison in a non-conference dual meet Friday evening from the Dedmon Center Natatorium in a score of 131-108. The Highlanders fall to 4-6 overall while the Dukes improve to 2-5.
James Madison got out to an early lead as they captured first in the 200 yard medley relay. The Highs would pick up second and third in the event to tighten the Dukes lead. It was in the 1000 yard freestyle that the Dukes would pull away as they placed first, second and third in the event. RU’s Amy Wharen placed fourth in the event with a time of 11:10.08. It was sophomore Kristen Deckert and freshman Jenny Biles that brought the High’s closer to JMU as they placed first (2:02.73) and second (2:03.01) respectively in the 200 yard freestyle. Deckert placed second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.04 and Biles placed fourth in the event. Junior Julie Brooks claimed a victory in the 400 yard IM touching the wall at 4:35.49, while freshman teammate Laura LeCroy placed third clocking a time of 4:52.49. It was neck and neck as Brooks fell to a close second (1:01.39) behind JMU’s Sarah Jane Bova (1:01.01) in the 100 yard backstroke. It was a battle in the 100 yard Butterfly as RU’s Kyndal Spradlin outlasted Duke’s Lauren Scott with a time of 1:00.83. Scott had clocked a time of 1:01.84 in the event. In a little under six tenths of a second Spradlin captured another tight victory in the 100 yard breaststroke over JMU’s Janel Danchak. Times were recorded at 1:09.07 and 1:09.65 respectively. In the event Shauna Bolger and Laura LeCroy tabbed third and fourth respectively. In the 100 yard freestyle Stacie Bliss placed second slightly behind Rachel Egbert from JMU. Egbert was timed at 56.07 and Bliss at 56.97. Placing fourth and fifth respectively were RU’s Libby Heeschen and Julie Bailey. In diving, RU’s Cora Legere placed third in the 3 meter diving with 127.34 points, while teammate Michelle Bowser took fourth with 87.44 points. In 1 meter diving Legere and Bowser both placed third (121.45) and fourth (92.54) respectively. The Highlanders return to the Dedmon Center Natatorium Saturday at 2:00 p.m. as they host Northeast Conference members Georgetown and Howard with the VMI men. |
