Highlanders Edged by College of Charleston

Radford, Va. -- Radford University's swimming and diving team was edged by the College of Charleston, 121-105, at the Dedmon Center Natatorium. Despite falling short, the Highlanders continue to assault the record books, as four more school records were set this evening.

Julie Brooks (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper) and Kelly Wallace (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) each lowered their records in the 400 IM and 200 back respectively, and also were part of the record setting 400 medley relay team. They were joined by Erica Crossman (Stanton, Va./Robert E. Lee) and Joy Bailey (Fairfield, Va./Radford), posting a winning time of 4:09.56. Brooks won the 400 IM with a time of 4:42.58, while Wallace finished second in the 200 back with a time of 2:12.50. Wallace also won the 200 freestyle (1:59.59).

Also setting a school record was freshman Kristan Deckert (Moseley, Va./Clover Hill), winning the 1000 freestyle (11:07.40). Radford's other win was posted by Crossman in the 200 backstroke, who also placed second in the 1000 free. In diving, Mary Beth Crawford (Casanova, Va./Highland) and Kate Thomas (Richmond, Va./James River) placed first and second in both the one and three meter dives.

For College of Charleston, four different individuals posted victories for the Cougars, with a pair of them also part of the winning 400 yard free relay.

In the men's meet held between the College of Charleston and Virginia Military Institute, the Cougars downed the Keydets, 134-89.

The Highlanders will host a dual meet next Saturday when Marshal and Gardner-Webb invade the Dedmon Center Natatorium at 1 p.m.
