Highlanders Downed by #16 West Virginia

Radford, Va. -- Radford, hosting their first nationally ranked opponent since 1992, put out a strong effort but could not overcome three early goals as they fell to 16th ranked West Virginia, 5-0, on a cool evening from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. Marisa Kanela netted a pair of goals and added an assist in the first 12 minutes of the match, helping the Mountaineers win their sixth straight and improve to 14-3 overall. The Highlanders dropped their second straight and fell to 8-6-1.

At 11:05, Kanela lofted a cross into the box that found the head of Rachael Minnich for a 2-0 lead. Just 56 seconds later Kanela made it 3-0, flicking home a long throw from Ashley Banks.

In the 26th minute, Kim Bonilla tallied the fourth Mountaineer goal, heading home a corner kick from Laura Kane. Sophomore Lauren Bergsten (Blacksburg, Va.) played the first half in net for the Highlanders, facing 17 shots and making four saves.

West Virginia tallied the lone goal of the half as Ashley Weimer put home a loose ball from about 25 yard in the 71st minute. Just minutes before the goal sophomore Tara Oleartchick (Woodbridge, Va.) made two diving saves, including an outstanding one to her right on a low bullet by Kanela, denying her of a hat trick. Oleartchick finished with three saves in the second half.

Right after the goal, junior Jonita Hooker (Woodbridge, Va.) almost found pay dirt, but her shot from about 25 yards was saved by Jacque Sutphin. Sutphin played the final 37:12 and made two saves, starting keeper Lana Bannerman made one save. Kanela led the Mountaineers with five shots, while senior Kristin Smith (Herndon, Va.) had two shots for the Highlanders.

Radford returns to Big South play on Sunday when the head to Winthrop for a 2 p.m. match.
