Gordon's Late Goal Sinks Highlanders Radford, Va. -- Birmingham-Southern’s Caitlin Gordon’s goal in the 78th minute lifted the Panthers to a 1-0 victory over Radford in Big South Conference action from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. The Highlanders, who were shut out for the first time this season, out shot BSC, 16-5 and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. The loss by RU snaps a four-game winning streak as they fall to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the Conference. The Panthers won their second-consecutive match, improving to 5-7-2 and 3-1-1 in the Big South. After a scoreless first half, the teams continued to battle in the second period. On the goal, Gordon dribbled through the defense and was able to get a shot off from the top of the box. The ball sailed over the head and through the gloves of RU keeper Tara Oleartchick (Woodbridge, Va.) for the lone tally of the match. Oleartchick finished with three saves, while the BSC tandem of Tarra Kohler and Andria Gray earned the shut out, stopping seven shots, five in the second half by Gray. Senior Nikki Porter (Maryville, Tenn.) led Radford with four shots. Radford returns to action on Friday, Oct. 15 when they travel to UNC Asheville for a match with the first place Bulldogs at 4 p.m. The Panthers are off until Saturday when they return home to host Big South opponent VMI at 5 p.m. |
