Mountaineers Top Highlanders, 3-1 Radford, Va. - Appalachian State used a pair of second half goals and strong goaltending from Breland Meany to down Radford, 3-1, in women's soccer action from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. Dawn-Marie Alfred's header off a corner kick by Whitney Southerd in the 59th minute put the Mountaineers ahead to stay. ASU improves to 2-0-1, while the Highlanders fall to 2-1. The Mountaineers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Abby Atwel found the back of the net 32 seconds into the match. She took a feed from Katie Ford and placed one over the outstretched arms of Radford keeper Annaliese Yoder (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill) from just outside the 18-yard box. After a few Highlander scoring opportunities were stopped by Meany, including a point blank save on Lindsey Pendergraph (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge), Radford got on the scoreboard in the 30th minute on an own goal. A cross from Pendergraph went off a defender's foot and floated over Meany into the net. Meany would finish the period with six saves and posted 10 on the night. Alfred tallied her goal by rifling a header just past the defender guarding the near post. The Mountaineer defense stood tall, stymieing any offensive flurry from the Highlanders. Meany and an ASU defender would stop a pair of chances by Nikki Porter (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) in close, then Porter booted one just wide minutes later. Appalachian State picked up an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Southard dribble home a loose ball after a scramble with the keeper and an RU defender. The Highlanders outshot the Mountaineers 16-9, while ASU had the advantage in corners, 5-3. Yoder made three saves for Radford. Radford hits the road on Friday, Sept. 12 when they face East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. They will return home on Sunday when they host VMI at 2 p.m. |
