RADFORD, Va. - Freshman Kara Ramer's (Richmond/Midlothian HS) first career goal was a big one, scoring the game-winner in the 97th minute, lifting Radford to a 2-1 overtime victory over Youngstown State in women's soccer action from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. Ramer scored when she took a feed from senior Kelly Bertwell (Upper Marlboro, Md./Saint Mary's) and slid it far post past a diving Jennifer Jennings.
Radford improves to 2-0, winning their first two games of the season for the first time since 1997 when they started 4-0, while Youngstown State (0-1) drops their season opener.
After a scoreless first half, senior Jevne Reid (Columbia, Md./Howard HS) gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute beating Jennings with a low shot just inside the right post. The lead was short lived as Youngstown's Lauren Ausmundson scored 2:32 later when she collected a loose ball about 25 yards out and placed it top shelf out of the reach of Samantha Woods.
Radford controlled most of the play, outshooting the Penguins 17-5 and registering 11 corners to just one for YSU. Woods made two saves for RU, while Jennings held her own, tallying eight.
The Highlanders continue at home when they host Tennessee Tech Friday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m.
