Highlanders Cruise Past Morehead State, 6-1 Morehead, Ky. -- Six different players scored as Radford defeated Morehead State, 6-1 in women's soccer action. Playing in a downpour, the Highlanders scored three goals in each half to up their record to 5-1, while the Eagles fell to 1-4. Senior Kelly Bertwell (Upper Marlboro, Md.) opened up the scoring just 4:01 into the match off a feed from Sarah Wicichowski (Rice, Va.). At 13:13, Alison Vollick (Westlake, Ohio), set up by Wicichowski and Jevne Reid (Columbia, Md.), would make it 2-0 at 13:13. The Eagles cut the lead in half when Jenna Adams scored at 35:37. Freshman Kara Ramer (Richmond, Va.) gave RU 3-1 cushion at 41:40 when she took a long forward pass from Erin Shaiko (Springfield, Va.), beating the defender one-on-one and placing it past the keeper. RU would continue the assault just 41 seconds into the second half when junior Debbie Leach (Olney, Md.) would bury one from about 20 yards. Sophomores Nikki Porter (Maryville, Tenn.) and Erin Crane (Midlothian, Va.) would score the final two goals for the Highlanders. Porter's, assisted by Bertwell, was her fourth of the season, while Crane's, set up by Reid, was her first collegiate goal. The Highlanders only took 12 shots but nine of them were on goal, while MSU was held to five shots (2 SOG). Samantha Woods (Boones Mill, Va.) made one save for RU, while Lauren Scott (Fredericksburg, Va.) played the final 20 minutes and did not face a shot. Stefani Workman gave up all six goals for the Eagles, making one save. Jennifer Miller made two saves in the final 24 minutes for MSU. Radford will take their three-game win streak to Elon, N.C., where they will face the Phoenix in the Highlanders conference opener on Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. |
