Highlanders Extends Streak to Five with 3-0 Win over Coastal

Radford, Va. -- Fifteen days since last seeing action did not seem to effect Radford University's women's soccer team as they cruised to a 3-0 Big South Conference win over Coastal Carolina at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium this afternoon. The Highlanders improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big South, while extending their winning streak to five games. The Lady Chanticleers fall to 4-4-2 and 1-2 in the conference.

With the wind at their advantage, Radford got on the board early, when sophomore Nikki Porter (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) took a through ball from senior Jevne Reid (Columbia, Md./Howard) and drove it over Coastal's keeper Candice Doten at 6:24.

Junior Debbie Leach (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) would make it 2-0 at 19:33. She took a feed from junior Rebecca Hoffman (Woodbridge, Va./Tulane) and placed it in the upper left corner from 18 yards out.

The Highlanders put the icing on the cake at 68:12 when senior Kelly Bertwell (Upper Marlboro, Md./Saint Mary's) banged one off the far post after a cross from Reid.

Keeper Samantha Woods (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) made four saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season. Doten stopped seven shots for Coastal. The Highlanders out shot the Lady Chanticleers 14-12, while CCU had the advantage in corners, 6-4.

Radford will return to the field on Monday, Oct. 7 when they host Birmingham Southern at 4 p.m.
