Radford Drops Heartbreaker in Double Overtime to Virginia Tech, 1-0

Blacksburg, Va. -- Despite a career high 15 saves from junior goalkeeper Samantha Woods (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County), the Highlanders dropped a tough 1-0 double overtime match to Virginia Tech (6-10-1) in women's soccer action at Moseley Field. The loss ends Radford's (12-3-1) road win streak at eight matches, finishing the regular season with an 8-1 road record.

The Hokies would tally the lone goal of the match just 56 seconds into the second overtime when Emily Barnhart received a pass from Jessica Russell dribbled through the Radford midfield and lofted a 30 yard shot over the outstretched arms of Woods. Hokie keeper Natasha Dirda made five saves and earned her second shutout of the season.

Although Tech out shot the Highlanders 34-11 in the match, the two teams battled through regulation scoreless under sloppy playing conditions. Each team would have scoring opportunities in regulation. For the Highlanders, shots by Nikki Porter (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) and Jevne Reid (Columbia, Md./Howard) sailed just wide.

Tech's Jessica Myers would hit the crossbar two times in the second half, while Kathy Holdsworth had a golden opportunity in the closing minutes of regulation on a shot from 12-yards out, but Woods made a diving save and Debbie Leach (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) cleared the ball out of the box.

The Highlanders close out their regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they host Liberty in the battle for the Big South Conference Regular Season Championship at 7 p.m.
