Highlanders Hold Off Charleston Southern For 3-2 Victory

Charleston, SC -- Radford University scored less than six minutes into the match and held off a late Charleston Southern rally for a 3-2 win in Big South Conference women's soccer action on Monday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

With the victory, the Highlanders improve to 12-2-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the conference, tying them with Liberty atop the standings and setting up a head-to-head matchup this Saturday at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium for the BSC regular season title. It also marked their eighth win on the road, tying the school record set in 1997. The Lady Buccaneers fall to 2-11-2, 0-4.

Jevne Reid (Columbia, Md./Howard) gave the Highlanders a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal just 5:40 into the contest off a feed from Debbie Leach (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel). RU scored their second goal at the 54:05 mark when Nikki Porter (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) scored off an assist from Reid. Kara Ramer (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) gave Radford a seemingly commanding 3-0 lead at the 66:12 mark, scoring on a pass from Rachel Heberer (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge).

Charleston Southern rallied late to make a game of it, scoring at the 71:38 mark on Kate Basom's shot off a pass from Sarah Hook. The Lady Bucs scored again as a result of a penalty kick when Jenna Baker's kick was controlled by Betsy Lapp, who shot and scored in the upper right corner at the 86:04 mark. Box Score

Radford outshot CSU (12-7) on the day. Six of CSU's seven shots came in the second half of play.

The Highlanders will finish their second five-match road swing of the season on Wednesday when they travel to Blacksburg and face Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. The matchup for the conference title will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Highlanders 2002 home finale.
