Radford, Va. -- Radford University (8-1-1, 2-0-1) and High Point University (2-7-2, 0-2-2) played to a hard fought, 2-2 draw this afternoon at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. The tie ends a six-match winning streak for the Highlanders, but keeps their unbeaten streak alive at seven. It also marked the first time RU has allowed more than one goal in 10 matches this season.
Radford would get on the board first when sophomore Nikki Porter (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) settled a long cross from Erin Cozza (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field), got herself free of a few defenders and rifled a shot past Panther keeper Katie Smith at 16:20. High Point's Wendy Williams broke free from two defenders and placed the ball over RU's Samantha Woods (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) with 3:33 left in the first half to knot the game at one going into the intermission.
The Panthers would take the lead at 48:48 on a goal from Jen Evans. She took a short cross in traffic from Williams and headed it into the net for a 2-1 advantage. Just minutes after header from Holly Smeltzer (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth) just went wide, the Highlanders tied it up when senior Sarah Wicichowski (Rice, Va./Clover Hill) after getting loose ball off a Panther defender a putting in the back of the net at 74:59.
After no scoring opportunities in the first overtime, each team came with inches of victory. The Highlanders chance came in the 105th minute when Porter, off a cross from senior Jevne Reid (Columbia, Md./Howard), chipped the ball just over the left corner of the goal. Three minutes later Williams' header from about 10 yards went inches over the crossbar.
The Highlanders outshot the Panthers 16-9 while each team took three corners. Woods and Smith made four saves apiece.
Radford ends their homestand on Wednesday, October 16 when they host Old Dominion at 4 p.m. After that, the Highlanders will be away from home for five consecutive games, beginning Oct. 20 against Towson University at 11 a.m.
