Radford, Va. -- Liberty University (7-8-1, 5-0-1 Big South) scored a pair of goals on in the first 13 minutes of play and held on for a 2-0 victory of Radford University (12-4-1, 4-1-1 BSC) in Big South women's soccer action from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. With the victory, the Lady Flames claim the conference regular season championship and a first round bye in the Big South tournament next weekend. The Highlanders will be the second seed in the tournament.
Liberty grabbed the lead just 1:30 into the game when Sarah Foster, in a scramble in front of the net, poked home the loose ball. They made it 2-0 at 13:19 when Emily Shuben fired a shot from 25 yards out and beat RU keeper Samantha Woods (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) high. Liz Rudolph set up the play by feeding a wide-open Shuben with a short pass.
Radford would have their best opportunity just six minutes later when Kelly Bertwell (Upper Marlboro, Md./Saint Mary's) headed the ball on goal after a corner kick, but Liberty keeper Natalie Mayer was there to make one of her four saves on the night.
The Highlanders held a slight advantage in shots (9-8) and corner kicks (6-5). Woods made two saves for Radford.
Next up for the Highlanders will be the Big South Tournament at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston S.C. In their quarterfinal match up, Radford will play seventh seeded Charleston Southern at 4:30 p.m.
