Highlanders Fall to #2 North Carolina, 6-1, in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Big South Champions Radford University (15-5-1) bowed to second-ranked North Carolina (18-1-4), 6-1, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament from Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels had six different goals scorers as they won their 72nd tournament match. Junior midfielder Rebecca Hoffman (Woodbridge, Va.) scored for the Highlanders, the first goal against the Tar Heels in UNC's opening game in the NCAA Tournament since 1994.

"I was really proud of our girls tonight," said head coach Ben Sohrabi. "We got everybody into the match. That's what it's all about. You want to get as far as you can in the National Tournament, but it's all about the girls being here and getting to play."

"It was an unbelievable experience coming here. How may people say they made it to the NCAA Tournament and get to play North Carolina," senior forward Jevne Reid (Columbia, Md.). "We had a dream season. To fight hard for three years and in the final year you're here to live out your dream, winning the conference and making the NCAAs was great."

Carolina opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Lindsay Tarpley scored on a header from Susan Bush and Elizabeth Ball. They added to their lead 5:10 later when Ball chipped the ball from about 25 yards out over RU keeper Samantha Woods (Boones Mill, Va.) for a 2-0 lead that the Tar Heels would take into the break.

It did not take the Tar Heels long to capitalize in the second half. Catherine Reddick corralled a loose ball off a defender and rifled it into the back of the net. After a pair of Carolina goals, Hoffman scored from about 25 yards out after collecting a misplayed ball by UNC keeper Aly Winget. The goal snapped a shutout streak of 410:43 by the Tar Heels, who allowed only one shot on goal and no goals in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Box Score

Woods finished the game, making 11 saves and giving up five goals for the Highlanders. RU was outshot 42-4 and Carolina had the advantage in corners, 14-1.
