Women's Soccer Blanks ETSU in Season Opener

RADFORD, Va. -- Sophomore Nikki Porter's (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville) two goals and an assist and a smothering defense helped Radford (1-0) to a 4-0 shutout victory over East Tennessee State (0-1) in their 2002 season opener at newly named Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

Senior Alison Vollick (Westlake, Ohio) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when she took a long midfield feed from Porter and rifled one top shelf off ETSU goalie Heather Sanden's fingertips. Porter would notch her first goal seven minutes later off another long pass, this time from junior Debbie Leach (Olney, Md.). RU would outshoot the Bucs 10-1 in the half and 16-1 for the game.

In the second half, Porter and senior Jevne Reid (Columbia, Md.) scored in the first five minutes to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Alexis Stewart (Lancaster, Pa.) picked up an assist on Porters' second goal, while Leach tallied her second of the game on Reid's just 36 seconds later.

Samatha Woods (Boones Mill, Va.) made one save to earn the shutout, while Sanden recorded seven saves for ETSU.

The Highlanders will return to the field on Sunday when they host Youngstown State at 1:00 p.m. ETSU is off until Monday when they host UNC Asheville in their home opener at 7:00 p.m.
