Highlanders Cruise Past Lady Knights, 75-34, for Fifth Straight

Radford, Va. - Radford held Southern Virginia to just 22 percent from the field and forced 26 turnovers as it won its fifth straight game, cruising past the Lady Knights, 75-34, from the Dedmon Center this evening. The Highlanders recorded 19 steals and had four players score in double figures on a night that saw RU hold an opponent to its lowest total points since Jan. 23, 1985 when it defeated William & Mary, 83-32 at the Dedmon Center.

Sophomore Sarah Stephens (Hampton, Va.) led the Highlanders with 15Alisha Jones posted 12 points and six rebounds (courtesy of FOTO International) points on 7-of-13 from the field. Freshman Corrie Fertitta (Roanoke, Va.) and senior Alisha Jones (Mesa, Az.) chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds apiece, while freshman Serena White (Durham County, N.C.) added 10 points, a game and career high seven steals and four assists.

Lynette Adams tied Stephens with a game high 15 points to lead the Lady Knights. Chelsea Lund pulled down a game best nine rebounds to go along with six points.

Despite holding Southern Virginia to 25 percent shooting and forcing nine turnovers, Radford took just a 12-point lead into the lockerroom. The Highlanders jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes of the first half behind six points from senior Taryn Causey (Collierville, Tenn.). At the 8:11 mark, RU went on a 10-0 run to push its lead to 32-13, holding the Lady Knight scoreless for 6:29. Kim Anderson ended the SVU drought with a three that sparked a 9-2 run, highlighted by a four-point play by Lynette Adams, to close out the half and get within 12.

The Highlanders quickly put the game out reach with a 15-2 run to take a 47-24 lead 5:39 into the second half. Radford maintained at least a 20-point advantage the rest of the way, with the final margin being its largest of the game.

Radford shot 46.5 percent from the field as 10 of 11 players scored. The Highs outrebounded the Lady Knights, 45-37. Each Highlander pulled down at least two boards on the night. RU also had a season high 21 assists led by Causey and senior Jesse Brunjak (Ooltewah, Tenn.) who each dished out five.

Radford opens up Big South Conference play when it hosts Charleston Southern on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7 pm
