Radford Rallies For Third Victory

NORFOLK, Va. . - Radford women's basketball overcame a seven-point second half deficit to earn its second straight victory, a 76-69 win over in-state rival Norfolk State Monday at Echols Hall.

The Highlanders shot 62.5 percent in the second half and recovered from 20 first half turnovers to earn the non-Conference win and improve to 3-7. Norfolk State falls to 0-10.

Senior Taryn Causey (Collierville, Tenn.) scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She also dished out seven assists. Causey also made the two most critical baskets of the game. She hit a basket-plus-free-throw to give Radford a 68-63 lead with 1:19 left, then stole the ball right back and hit a lay-up for a seven-point RU edge. NSU couldn’t get within five after that.

In addition to Causey, sophomore Sarah Stephens (Hampton, Va.) secured a double-double with 19 points, tying a career high, and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Shavon Earp (Hampton, Va.) also had a career high 17 points for RU.

Brenda McClary scored a layup off a pass from Shenae Johnson to give NSU its biggest lead, at 36-29, just more than two minutes into the second half. But RU scored the next six points, capped by one of Causey’s four 3-pointers, to pull even. Neither team led by more than four points until Causey’s spurt in the final 90 seconds.

Shenae Johnson scored a season-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting to lead the Spartans. Yomika Corbitt had 12 points and a career-high seven steals for NSU, which tallied 19 steals on the evening. Jasmine Wilson added 11 points for NSU.

Radford returns home to face non-Conference foe Navy on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Norfolk State will be at MEAC opponent South Carolina State on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
