Women's Basketball Falls to TAMUCC, 70-64

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Despite a career high 20 points and 11 rebounds from freshman Robin Kantin (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch), Radford's comeback bid fell short as they dropped a 70-64 deciRobin Kantin (courtesy of FOTO International)sion to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round of the Hattiesburg Inn on the Hill Classic.

The Islanders' Terra Andrews led all scorers with 26 points. She also grabbed a team high eight boards.

Trailing 54-41 with 8:26 to go, the Highlanders used a 16-3 run, sparked by seven points from Kantin, to knot the game at 57, but a free throw and a jumper by Roberta Plaza put TAMUCC up by three and they would hold on for the win.

Senior Amanda Neby (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) netted 19 points and nine rebounds, while senior Kylie Williamson (Ankeny, Iowa/Bondurant-Farrar) chipped in with 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc. Neby is just four points shy on 1,000 and moved into 10th in career rebounding with 577.

Radford jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first half behind a pair of Williamson three's and a Neby jumper. The Islanders chipped away at the lead, taking their first lead at the 8:50 mark (19-18).

The lead would change hands six times before a 7-2 spurt by TAMUCC gave them a 33-28 advantage. Radford was able to get within three (32-35) at the break.

In the second half, the Islanders slowly build their lead to 13, due to Radford going 7:28 with hitting a field goal. Alisha Jones' (Mesa, Ariz./Temple JC) put back at the 7:54 mark, ended the drought and ignited RU's 16-3 run. After tying the game, RU had a few opportunities to take the lead, but were unable to capitalize.

Radford will play Mississippi Valley State, who lost to host Southern Mississippi 66-39 in the opener, at 3 p.m. EST in the consolation game.
