Radford Splits Saturday Matches

WORCESTER, Mass.--Radford volleyball picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Siena 3-2 in the first round of the Holy Cross Invitational Tournament Friday evening at the Hart Center. (Youngstown State Box Score) (Holy Cross Box Score)

Radford split the final two matches of the Holy Cross Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday, defeating Youngstown State 3-2 in the morning before falling to Holy Cross 3-0 in the nightcap. RU finished the tournament with a 2-1 record and is now 2-2 on the season.

The Highlanders rallied past Youngstown State, recovering from a 2-0 start in game scores to win 23-30, 20-30, 30-22, 30-22, 15-12. Senior Kate McHugh (North Branford, Conn.) paced Radford with 14 kills and 13 digs. Junior Divonna Cox (Virginia Beach, Va.) and junior Elizabeth Aldredge (Richmond, Va.) each had 12 kills for RU. Freshman Josie Hanners (Richmond, Va.) had 42 assists.

Holy Cross took advantage of the Highlanders having played two five-game matches in less than 24 hours to defeat RU 3-0. The Crusaders won 30-26, 30-26, 30-14. McHugh again led RU with seven kills. Sophomore Jennifer Fritz (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied 14 digs.

Radford returns to action on Friday when it heads to Charlottesville, Va. to face Virginia and Penn as part of the UVA Tournament. The first match is scheduled for 1:00 pm
