Volleyball Drops Match to UNC Greensboro in Five GREENVILLE, N.C. - Lajean Morrow earned her first double-double of the season with 19 kills and 15 digs to lead the Spartans past Radford, 26-30, 30-24, 30-25, 16-30 and 15-11, in the fourth match of the City Hotel & Bistro Pirate Invitational. Radford had four players with double figures in kills. Divona Cox, Tiffany Guthrie and Sarah Gates all had 14 kills, while Kate McHugh added 11 . The Highlanders out-hit the Spartans .294-to-.148 but Radford committed 22 service errors. Radford rallied from a 2-1 deficit to tie the match 2-2. In game four, Guthrie and Gates combined for 10 kills to lead the Highlanders to the 30-16 win and force game five. UNC Greensboro trailed 5-3, before two attacking errors by Guthrie and a kills by Kim Dayton put the Spartans ahead 6-5. Radford retook the lead 9-8 on an error by UNCG's Abbi Meyer. After UNCGreensboro tied the game, 9-9, Morrow's two kills sparked a 6-2 run giving the Spartans their first match win of the season. Adrian Hicks had 27 assists for UNC Greensboro and Dayton added 14 digs. Danielle Rynd had a double-double for the Highlanders with 41 assists amd 13 digs. Allison Ainsley had a career high 20 digs for Radford. ECU Volleyball Captures City Hotel & Bistro Tournament GREENVILLE, N.C.- Sophomore outside hitter Pam Ferris recorded 10 kills and five service aces to lead the East Carolina Volleyball team over Radford, 30-18, 30-28 and 30-15, Saturday night in the final match of the City Hotel & Bistro Pirate Invitational. ECU (3-0) claimed the tournament title after defeating UNC Greensboro, Lipscomb and the Highlanders (0-3) all in three straight sets. UNC Greensboro (2-1) defeated Lipscomb (1-2) in four games, 24-30, 30-24, 30-21 and 30-19, to finish as the tournament's runner-up. Ferris was named the tournament's most valuable player after recording 28 kills, 21 digs and 11 service aces in three matches. Lipscomb's Kristin Peck, Radford's Sarah Gates, UNC Greenboro's LaJean Morrow and ECU's Erica Wilson and Jaime Bevan were all named to the All-tournament team. Against Radford, Bevan added eight kills while Wilson and Katie Jannusch each knocked down seven kills for the Pirates. Divona Cox led Radford with 16 kills. Allison Ainsley added 10 digs. Ferris had five kills in game one to lead ECU to the 30-18 win. The Pirates built a 5-0 lead behind Jessica Vick's two service aces. After Tiffany Guthrie's kill brought the Highlanders within, 8-5. The Pirates went on a 5-1 run making it 13-6. Radford pulled within 15-10 on a kill by Cox, but ECU outscored Radford 15-8 down the stretch. Radford overcame a 9-4 deficit in game two to go on top the Pirates 16-13. Gates recorded two kills and two aces for the Highlanders. ECU tied the game on an ace by WIlson, 20-20. After Gates tied the game 28-28, a bad set by Danielle Rynd and another ace by Wilson lifted ECU. Ferris had four aces and two kills in the final game to help the Pirates to their third match win. ECU outhit Radford .272-191 and recorded 17 service aces. |
