Winthrop Advances To Semifinals With 3-0 Win Over Radford 2003 Big South Volleyball Championship Match 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mary Hock had 18 kills to lead third-seeded Winthrop to a 3-0 win over sixth-seeded Radford in the second quarterfinal match of the 2003 Big South Volleyball Tournament, sponsored by Piggly Wiggly. The Eagles advanced to Saturday's semifinal match with second-seeded Coastal Carolina by downing the Highlanders 30-28, 30-23 and 30-24. Hock, a first team All-Big South selection, posted an impressive .343 hitting percentage and added four aces to lead Winthrop (22-11). Tiffany Guthrie and Kate McHugh led Radford (4-27) with 11 kills apiece. Lindsey Remmers added eight kills for Winthrop, who hit .250 for the match, while Tori Grafeman, Anna Vagstad and Taryn Surbaugh each posted seven kills. Defensively, Sarah Billingsley led the Eagles with 11 digs. After Winthrop narrowly held off Radford in game one, the Highlandersheld a 13-12 advantage in game two. However, the Eagles rallied behind the hitting of Hock, Grafeman and Remmers, who combined for 15 kills in the game, and stormed out to a commanding 23-13 lead after an 11-1 run. Second team All-Conference setter Emily Heckl helped direct the Eagleoffensive attack with 36 assists. The Eagles' semifinal match with Coastal Carolina will begin at 4:30 p.m. CST. Box Score |
