Radford Drops Two At Pirate Classic

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Fordham scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Radford 5-4 in the 2005 Holiday Inn Express Pirate Classic at the ECU Softball Field Friday afternoon. The Highlanders lost their second game of the day to East Carolina, 10-3.

Fordhams' Jamie Dautel hit a three-run homer in the sixth to give the Rams the lead and eventually the win.

RU got on the board first against Fordham when junior Danielle Thompkins doubled to right field, scoring freshman Ashley Taylor and junior Morgan Nicholas. The Highs pushed the lead to three when freshman Cassie Rhodes scored on a throwing error by the Fordham catcher.

The Rams crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the third to pull within one run. The Highlanders scored their final run in the fifth when Nicholas' RBI single scored Lara Wohlgemuth.

Sophomore Breanna Felix took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits.

Senior Kate Manuse belted a pair of home runs while going 3-of-4 with six RBI to lead East Carolina to a 10-3 victory over Radford in RU's second game. Junior Krista Jessup also collected three hits in the game. ECU racked up five runs on six hits in the seventh to secure the win. Brently Bridgeforth (2-0) picked up her second win of the season, scattering five hits over seven innings.

Radford got on the scoreboard first with a two-out double in the first, but ECU answered with four in the top of the third. Manuse's two-run single plated Ashley Quick and Shirley Burleson to give the Pirates the lead for good.

RU scattered three runs on five hits in the game, including a home runs by Thompkins. Taylor took the loss, allowing 10 runs on 14 hits.

Radford falls to 2-3 and will face Villanova and Towson tomorrow at 1:00 and 3:00 pm.
