Felix and Smith Earn VaSID All-State Honors

Radford, Va. - Radford softball players, Bre Felix (Spring Valley, Calif.) and Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va.) were selected to the VaSID All-State team. Felix and Smith are the first all-state honorees for the Highlanders under three-year head coach Amy Kvilhaug. The team, which highlights the best softball players in the Commonwealth, is voted upon by the members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors of America.

Both Smith and Felix were instrumental in helping Radford to itAshley Smith (courtesy of Foto International)s best softball season in school history. The Highlanders won the most games in school history, finishing 39-25, while several single-season and career records were broken.

Smith, a senior right fielder, left RU as the all-time RBI leader and ranks second in career home runs, hits and doubles, while tying for third in stolen bases and fourth in runs scored. This season she was named First Team All-Big South after batting .317 with nine doubles, 10 home runs, 32 RBI and 35 runs scored. She led the Highs in home runs, runs, walks (20), slugging (.524) and on base percentage (.395) and ranked in the top 10 in nine Big South offensive categories.

Felix, a First-Team All-Big South selection, was stellar in the circle this season, setting several single-season pitching records at Radford. The sophomore lefty finished the 2005 campaign, 26-11 with a 1.91 ERA, eight shutouts and one save. She Bre Felix (courtesy of Foto International)struck out 205 batters, while walking just 23 in 234.2 innings of work. Her wins, strikeouts, innings, complete games (29), appearances (40) and starts (36) were all single-season records, while her shutouts tied the single-season mark. She also tied the single-game strikeout record of 14 twice and tossed a no-hitter versus Delaware. She will enter her junior campaign needing one shutout, 12 victories and 32 strikeouts to become RU’s career leader in those categories.

Virginia’s Sara Larquier was selected as the VaSID Player of the Year for the second straight year, while Virginia Tech’s Scot Thomas was named the VaSID Coach of the Year.

Overall, the Commonwealth’s two ACC schools, Virginia and Virginia Tech each placed three representatives on the University Division All-State team, with Virginia’s Larquier and Elea Crocket, the only returners from the 2004 all-state team. Radford placed two players on the team, while Hampton, Liberty and Longwood each had one representative on the 11-player team.
