Highlanders Add Rector During Spring Period

Radford, Va. --Radford University's head softball coach Amy Kvilhaug announced that high school senior Shelby Rector has signed a National Letter-of-Intent. The first baseman from Virginia Beach, Va. will join the Highlanders this fall.

Rector is currently batting .450 with three doubles, a home run and nine RBI after seven games this season for Princess Anne High School. In 2003, she led the Cavaliers to a 27-2 record and an AAA Virginia state championship and was named first team all-state and second team South Region All-American.

"The addition of Shelby Rector to our squad will continue to raise the level of talent in our program," states Kvilhaug. "She has a phenomenal glove and will contribute offensively as well. Shelby has just as much heart and desire for the game as anyone I've seen."

The three-time first-team All-Tidewater and All-Beach District member batted .330 with a team high 10 doubles and 27 RBI as a junior. She also scored 17 runs, stole 10 bases and struck out just five times in 101 plate appearances.

"We are lucky to have Shelby as she is a great player, excellent student, and a wonderful person. She comes from a great family who has supported her softball endeavors tremendously. We truly look forward to having Shelby next season," said Kvilhaug.

Rector joins Ashley Taylor (Ringgold, Va./Dan River), a pitcher/infielder, who signed during fall signing period.
