Highlanders Swept at North Carolina State

Raleigh, N.C. --Radford was swept by the scores of 4-0 and 11-8 in a pair of games at North Carolina State this afternoon. The Highlanders fall to 20-23, while the Wolfpack improve to 25-17.

Radford was held to just two hits as they fell in game one, 4-0. NC State's Abbie Sims tossed a complete game, striking out 11 and walking none. Lara Wohlgemuth (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) and Lindsay Woody (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) singled for the Highlanders. Jennifer Bosley (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) suffered the defeat for RU, allowing seven hits, striking out nine and walking one batter.

The Wolfpack scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Heather Gelbard went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Miranda Ervin went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the inning.

In game two, Radford rallied from a 7-3 deficit to take an 8-7 lead with five runs in the sixth, only to see NC State post three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out an 11-8 win. Amber Drexel (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) led RU going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

NC State hit a total of five round trippers and pounded out 12 hits. Shaina Ervin, Jennifer Patterson, Heather Jedrey and Caroline Blount each homered and had a pair of hits for the Wolfpack. Ervin and Patterson each knocked in three runs.

Carla Shephard picked up the win in relief. She went two innings, allowing one hit, striking out two and walking one to improve to 2-1. Bosley (11-11) suffered the loss in relief. She allowed three runs on four hits and walked one in 1.2 innings of work.

Radford will head to East Tennessee State for the rescheduled doubleheader with the Bucs at 1 p.m. on April 6.
