Highs Take Highlander Classic with 7-0 Win Over Albany

Radford, Va. --Behind a 10-hit attack and a two-hitter by Jen Bosley (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett), Radford (18-21) defeated Albany (12-12) to win the 2004 Highlander Softball Classic. The Great Danes made it to the championship game with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Brown earlier in the morning.

Radford scored seven runs in the first three innings and held on with solid pitching and defense. Bosley improved to 10-9, striking out five and walking one. Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C./Stratford) and Colleen Casey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) each went 2-for-4, scoring a run apiece. Walling had a triple, RBI and two stolen bases.

The Highlanders posted a 5-0 lead after two innings. In the first, the Highs got a RBI single by Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va./Northside), followed by triple by Walling scoring Smith. Sara Beth Clayton (Chesapeake, Va./Louisburg College) made it 5-0 with a long three run home run to center.

Radford added two more in the third on a bases loaded single by Josi Sutton (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson), plating Walling from third. Casey scored when the leftfielder bobbled the ball.

Kristin Couris suffered the loss for the Great Danes. She allowed seven runs, four earned, on eight hits and walked one in three innings. Casey Halloran held RU in check the rest of the way, allowing just two hits and striking out two in three innings of relief. Julie Gannon and Ashley Rios each singled for Albany.

Radford return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they host Brown.
