Felix's Perfect Game Highlights Day One of Highlander Classic
Radford, Va. --Freshman Breanna Felix (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) tossed a perfect game against Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-16), highlighting Radford’s (16-20) first day at the Highlander Classic. The lefty struc Radford scored two runs in the first and one in the third behind the performance from Felix. In the first, the Highs quickly scored two runs on a single by Sara Beth Clayton (Chesapeake, Va./Louisburg College) and a three base error on the rightfielder scoring both Clayton and Lara Wohlgemuth (Centreville, Va./Chantilly), who led off the inning with a walk. In the third, Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C./Stratford), who led off with a single, scored after moving to second on an error, stealing third and reaching home when the throw went into leftfield. Walling finished the game 2-for-2, while Wohlgemuth went 1-for-1 with two stolen bases. Against Albany, the Great Danes got on the scoreboard in the top of the first on a sac fly by Katrina Dunning, plating Brittany Burnham, who singled with one out. The Highlanders responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on back-to-back two out doubles by Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va./Northside) and Colleen Casey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson). Casey’s knocked in Wohlgemuth, who led off with a walk and Smith to put RU up 2-1. An RBI double by in the fourth by Kelly Ogden tied the game at two. Radford got out of further trouble getting a double play as Clayton threw out the Albany runner trying to tag from third. The Great Danes took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run double by pinch hitter Liz Wieboldt. In the sixth, RU manufactured the three runs on just one hit. The Highs started the inning loading the bases on a single by Lindsay Wood (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), an error and a walk. A sac fly by pinch hitter Hallie East (Roanoke, Va./Glenvar) and fielder’s choice grounder by Wohlgemuth tied the game at four. After a pitching change, Clayton lined out to center plating Kat Peck (Manassas, Va./Young Harris College) with the winning run. Peck picked up the win in 2.1 innings of relief. She struck out one and allowed three hits to improve to 5-5 on the year. Carisa Marucci suffered the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on one hit in .1 innings of work. Jen Nolette and Dunning each had a pair of hits for the Great Danes, while Clayton went 2-for-3 for RU. Radford returns to action tomorrow when they play at 10 a.m. and noon against Brown and Niagara respectively. |
