Clayton Named Choice Hotels Big South Player of the Week

Radford, Va. --Coming off a strong week in both the field and at the plate, Radford junior Sara Beth Clayton (Chesapeake, Va./Louisburg College) was named Choice Hotels Big South Player of the Week, announced by the Conference office Monday evening. The centerfielder was a key part in the Highlanders 6-3 week, which included a Highlander Softball Classic Championship.

In nine games last week, Clayton batted .357 (10-26) with three doubles, a triple and a home run. She had seven RBI, scored six runs and slugged .643, while recording two outfield assists. She recorded at least one hit in eight of the nine games.

She went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in a victory over UNCG. She had the game-winning sac fly and went 2-for-3 on day one of the Highlander Classic against Albany. In the championship game against Albany, she belted a three-run homer to put the Highs comfortably ahead. Named to the All-Tournament team, Clayton batted .312 with a triple, home run, five RBI and scored four runs. She also posted a .625 slugging percentage and recorded both her outfield assists at the Classic.

Coming off a pair of wins on Monday, the Highlanders are currently 20-21, their first 20-win season since 2001. They hit the road on Wednesday to face East Tennessee State at 1 p.m.
