Highlanders Split with Mountaineers

Radford, Va. --Radford split in softball action with Appalachian State this afternoon from Dedmon Center field. The Mountaineer took game one 5-1, while the Highlanders won game two, 4-3 in eight innings. With the split RU moves to 23-24, while ASU moves to 13-23.

Lara Wohlgemuth (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) provided RU with the victory in game two. After being sacrificed to third by Lindsay Woody (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), she made heads up play, scooting home with the winning run when the ball was not returned to the pitching circle in time.

The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the third on a RBI double by Christa Hicks. Sara Beth Clayton (Chesapeake, Va./Louisburg College) tied the game in the fourth on a solo round tripper to center, her third of the season. ASU quickly regained the lead in the fifth when Amber Handy scored on an error after an infield single by Mary Lutz.

The Highlanders went up 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. After Kat Peck (Manassas, Va./Young Harris College) tripled with one out, Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C./Stratford) executed a perfect suicide squeeze to tie the game at two. Clayton put RU up 3-2 when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. ASU tied the game in the seventh on a run scoring single by Diana Cook.

Clayton finished the game with two RBI. Breanna Felix (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) earned the win to improve to 5-7. She allowed two earned runs, struck out seven and walked one.

Appalachian State, who pounded out 11 hits, got a 3-for-4 performance from Handy and also got two hits from Lutz, Hicks and Cook. Marie Watson suffered the loss in relief. She went 2.2 innings, giving up no hits and no earned runs and striking out one.

The Mountaineers behind by a strong performance from Jordan Arnold, took game one. Arnold allowed one run on four hits. She struck out three and walked one.

ASU put a pair of runs on the board in the second inning on solo homeruns by Lindsay Glover and Kristyn Hurt. They made it 3-0 in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Cook and added two insurance runs in the seventh on a throwing error and a RBI fielder’s choice grounder to third.

Radford posted a run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single to left by Peck scoring Colleen Casey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) who double with two outs.

Handy and Glover each had a pair of hits for the Mountaineers. Peck, who came on in relief in the first, allowed three runs, two earned, struck out eight in 5.2 innings of work. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Radford will be off until April 14 when they travel to the University of Virginia at 2:30 p.m.
