Radford, Va. -- Head softball coach Amy Kvilhaug has announced the addition of two more players into Radford University's program. Louisburg College's Sara Beth Clayton (Chesapeake, Va.) and Melissa Register (Cove City, N.C.) have signed National Letters-of-Intent to play for the Highlanders in the 2003-04 season.
"Melissa and Sara Beth are going to be key additions to our team," said Kvilhaug. "Serving as team captains last season at Louisburg College, they bring both college experience and leadership to our program. They also come from wonderful and supportive families."
Clayton and Register, All-South Region X members in 2002 and 2003, helped the Lady Hurricanes to back-to-back Region X Championships and a district runner-up finish this season.
In 2003, Clayton, a team captain and leadoff batter for the Louisburg, ranked 25th in the nation with 21 stolen bases. The centerfielder also batted .327 with a team high 35 runs and knocked in five runs. During her freshman campaign, she batted .440 with 24 RBI and 33 runs scored, earning her third team NJCAA All-American status.
"Sara Beth's tremendous speed will certainly be an asset to our lineup next year. She is a great player who will lead by example with her knowledge of the game."
Register, a shortstop, also batted .440 as a freshman with 29 RBI, 33 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. This season, the team captain was .322 at the plate with 23 RBI, 19 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.
"Melissa is a solid defensive player who can hit for both average and power. She should make an immediate impact in our lineup at shortstop."
Clayton and Register join fall signee Breanna Felix (LHP, Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel HS) as members of Kvilhaug's 2003-04 signing class.
