Highlanders Take Nightcap, Earn Split With Campbell In Softball's Home Opener Radford, Va. -- Radford University (3-10) scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh pull out a 3-2 win over Campbell University (9-11) in softball action from Dedmon Center Field. The Lady Camels, behind a two-run sixth, took game one, 4-2. In game two, Radford broke through for a pair of runs in the fifth. With one out, Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C.) doubled home Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va.), who reach on a dropped pop up by the shortstop to lead off the inning. After an unsuccessful squeeze play, Walling stole home to give RU a 2-0 advantage. Radford’s Jennifer Bosley (Oakland, Md.), who had given up two hits in the first six innings, got into a little trouble in the top of the seventh. After striking out the leadoff batter, Campbell’s Lisa Evans and Holly Harris hit back-to-back home runs to knot the score at two. She would settle down and get the final two outs of the inning. Bosley earned the complete game win, giving up four hits, while striking out three and walking one. In the bottom of half of the inning, the Highlanders put runners on the corners with one out. After Tina Rogers’ (Fairport, N.Y.) lined out to third, Walling’s grounder to third was booted and Lindsay Woody (Annapolis, Md.) scored the winning run. Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas) and Rogers each went 2-for-4 for the Highlanders. Harris took the loss in relief. She gave up the run on a hit in 1.2 innings of work. Game one saw Radford score in the first on a two-out RBI single by Rogers, plating Woody with the first of the day. Campbell struck back with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Kristina Schmallen and Amy Anderson poked two-out RBI singles in those innings respectively. The Highlanders tied things up at two apiece in the bottom of the fourth when Donita Brady (Virginia Beach, Va.) single home Walling, who had reach on a three base error by the center fielder. The Lady Camels scored their runs in the sixth on a fielder’s choice by Harris and a run-scoring single by Erica Willis. Radford had their opportunities throughout the game but left a total of nine runners on base. Smith and Tolleson paced the Highlanders, going 2-for-4 at the plate. For the Lady Camels, Shannon O’Brien went 3-for-4 with a double, while Meredith Moody finished 2-for-4. The Highlanders travel to Elon, N.C. from March 7-9 to participate in the Elon University Tournament. Radford will face James Madison at noon and UMBC at 2 p.m. on the first day of competition. |
