Drexel and Lemmert Hit Round Trippers as Highlanders Down Lipscomb, 7-5 Atlanta, Ga. -- Radford opened up at the Buzz Classic by defeating Lipscomb, 7-5 . In games two and three, they fell to Troy State, 6-3 and host Georgia Tech, 5-3.s In game one, sophomore Amber Drexel and freshman Katie Lemmert hit their first career home runs, leading Radford to a 7-5 win over Lipscomb at the Buzz Classic. Drexel provided the Highlanders with all the offense they would need as she belted a grand slam in the top of the second to put RU up for good, 4-2. After the Bison cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the second, Lemmert, who picked up her first career hit with a single in the second, gave the Highs some breathing room, 6-3, with a two-run jack in the top of the third. Lemmert finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Against Troy State, Radford fell behind 3-0 in the second inning and never recovered as they fell, 6-3 to the Trojans. Lemmert finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the second game in a row. Georgia Tech rallied with three two-out runs, in the top of the fifth to pull out a 5-3 win over Radford. Lindsay Wood would do the honors, hitting a three-run homer, the second of three home runs for the Yellowjackets, off of Jennifer Bosley with two down in the fifth. Georgia Tech opened the scoring in the top of the second when Soraya Reddick went deep. The Highlanders responded with three runs in the bottom of the third on four straight hits. With one out and pinch runner Colleen Casey on second, Lindsay Woody roped a run-scoring triple to right field. She would come in on an infield single by Lara Wohlgemuth. After another infield single by Glynn Tolleson, Ashley Smith singled, knocking in Wohlgemuth, giving RU a 3-1 lead. After the three-run fifth, the Jackets would add an insurance run in the sixth on Reddick's second home run of the day. The Highlanders will close out the tournament tomorrow when they face Western Kentucky at 11 a.m. |
