Highlanders Split at Birmingham Southern Birmingham, Ala. -- Radford University split their doubleheader with Birmingham-Southern in softball action from the BSC Softball Park Wednesday evening. Tina Rogers’ (Fairport, N.Y.) RBI double in the top of the eighth inning broke a 3-3 deadlock, leading the Highlanders a 6-3 win over Birmingham-Southern in game one. In game two, the Panthers never looked back from a four-run first, winning 5-2 and earning a split with the . In game one, Radford (5-15) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two out, Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va.) roped an RBI triple to right field scoring Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas). Rogers followed Smith with a run-scoring single to left field. The Highlanders added another run in the third on an RBI single by Smith, scoring Lindsay Woody, who led the inning off with an infield single. The Panthers started to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the third when Dawn Treadwell tripled to lead off the inning, and scored on a bunt from Lacey Barth. The Panthers continued to cut into the lead with a run in the fourth, and tied it up in the sixth when Shannon Cantrell scored the tying run on a passed ball. After Rogers’ RBI double in the eighth, the Highlanders would add two more unearned runs. Rogers scored on an error by the shortstop, followed by an RBI groundout by Donita Brady (Virginia Beach, Va.). Smith and Rogers each finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Woody and Brady also collected two hits apiece for the Highlanders. Jennifer Bosley (Oakland, Md.) improved to 4-6 on the season with the complete game victory. She gave up five hits and struck out eight. Kristina Villavicencio was hung with the loss to fall to 3-7 on the season. Treadwell earned the win in game two and moved to 5-4 on the year as she gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk in five innings of work. Deana Benner (Glen Burnie, Md.) suffered the loss to fall to 1-9 on the season as she gave up four earned runs on four hits. She struck out one and walked one. Game two was called after five innings due to heavy fog. The Highlanders return home for their next game on Wednesday, March 19 when they host East Tennessee State at 2:00 p.m. |
