Highlanders Blanked By North Carolina In Doubleheader Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Radford University was swept by North Carolina this afternoon in softball action from the UNC Softball Complex. The Tar Heels won by scores of 7-0 and 2-0 to improve to 8-5, while the Highlanders fall to 0-9 on the year. The Highlanders were no hit in game one by UNC's Cox. A four-run first was all the Tar Heels needed, as Cox did the rest. She struck out seven and walked three. Hallie East managed to draw two of the three walks for the Highlanders. Deana Benner suffered the complete game loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. In game two, the received a solid pitching performance from freshman Jennifer Bosely, but it was not enough as the Highlanders managed only two hits in a 2-0 loss to the Heels. Bosely went the distance, allowing both runs on six hits. She struck out four and walked two. Lindsey Woody and Ashley Smith singled for the Highlanders. Alison Yin posted the complete game shutout, striking out five and walking two batters. UNC struck for single two-out runs in the fourth and six innings. With two out in the fourth, Emily Price homered center to put the Heels up 1-0. In the sixth, North Carolina received a pair of back-to-back two out doubles, the latter by Dionne Streete to drive in pinch runner Natashlyn Snipes for an insurance run. Radford's only scoring opportunity came in the fourth when they loaded the bases with two out, but Amanda Walling would ground one back to the box to end the threat. The Highlanders will travel to Virginia Beach on Jan. 28 to participate in the Dixie Classic. Radford opens up with Norfolk State and Villanova on Friday at 9 and 11 a.m. On Saturday, they will face Seton Hall and James Madison at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. |
