Islanders' Late-Inning Surge Too Much For Radford Rock Hill, S.C. -- Sixth-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (27-21) pounded out 19 hits as it upset second-seeded Radford University (16-35), 17-1, in the Game 5 of the winners bracket. The Islanders scored 14 runs in the final two innings to break open a 3-1 game. TAMU-Corpus Christi advances in the winners bracket and will play top-seeded Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. Friday. At the plate, the Islanders were led by Katie Evans, Shelley Oetkin and Janelle Sanders who each registered three hits apiece, while Christy Cortez and Eden Goss knocked in three runs. Sarah Pauly picked up the win, allowing a run on three hits in five innings. She struck out six and walked one, improving her record to 20-13. Jennifer Bosley suffered the loss, allowing 12 runs on 13 hits. She struck out one and walked four, falling to 7-17 on the season. The Islanders grabbed a 3-0 in the third, scoring all their runs with two outs. Evans started the four-hit rally with a ground rule double, knocking in Kelly Amos, who scored three runs on the evening. Goss then plated Evans with a double to left center. After a single by Rachel Mendez put runners at the corners, Oetken blooped a run-scoring single down the left field line, scoring Goss. The Highlanders plated a run in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI bloop single to center by Glynn Tolleson, scoring pinch runner Colleen Casey from second. TAMU-Corpus Christi broke the game open with a five-run sixth and a nine-run seventh. In the sixth, Cortez and Goss highlighted the inning with a pair of two-run singles. The Islanders sent 15 batters and collected nine hits by nine different batters in the seventh. Lindsay Woody led Radford, going 2-for-3 at the plate. The Highlanders fall to the loser's bracket and will play an elimination game against Elon at 1 p.m. on Friday. |
