Coastal Carolina Takes Two From Radford Radford, Va. -- Radford (9-24, 2-2 BSC) was swept by Coastal Carolina (28-13, 6-2 BSC) in Big South Softball action from Dedmon Center Field this afternoon. The Lady Chanticleer squeaked out a 1-0 eight-inning victory in game one, their third consecutive extra-inning game this weekend, followed by a five-inning, 9-1 win in game two. Sara Thompson’s sac fly in the eighth broke a 0-0 deadlock, giving Coastal a 1-0 win over the Highlanders. Radford would threaten in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to plate the tying run from third. That was the story for the Highlanders as they left seven runners on base, including four at third. Christine Doyle earned the complete game win for CCU. She allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two as she improved to 15-6 on the year. Deana Benner (Glen Burnie, Md.) suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run on five hits. She struck out five and walked three as she fell to 3-13. Radford’s Morgan Nicholas (Fairfax, Va.) and Coastal’s Kimberly Joshepson each registered a pair hits for their respective teams. In game two, Coastal Carolina pounded out 10 hits, five for extra bases, on their way to the 9-1 win. Joshepson shined offensively again, going 2-for-4, highlighted by a bases-loaded triple in CCU’s five-run fifth. The Lady Chants opened the scoring with a three-run third. Suzanne Kimbrell knocked in a pair with a single to right center, while the third run scored as Kimbrell was thrown out at second on the same play. They would add a run in the fourth on an error by shortstop Lindsay Woody (Annapolis, Md.). Kimbrell finished the game, 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. The Highlanders finally got on the board in the fifth when Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va.) belted her first home run of the season to dead center. CCU broke the game open in the fifth with five runs. Along with the three-run triple by Joshepson, Brittany Nelson and Holly Lee recorded RBI singles. Morgan Tolleson (7-3) picked up the win in game two for Coastal, allowing a run on seven hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. Jennifer Bosley (Oakland, Md.) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on the six hits in four innings. She struck out three and walked four as she fell to 6-12 on the season. Tina Roger went 2-for-2 for the Highlanders. Radford will head back onto the road this Wednesday when they play a pair at North Carolina A&T at 3 p.m. They return home on Thursday for a Big South doubleheader with Charleston Southern University at 4 p.m. |
