Softball Splits a Pair of One-Run Games with Campbell BUIES CREEK, N.C. A three-run seventh gave Radford University (6-20) a 6-5 come-from-behind victory in game two, to earn a split with Campbell University (17-15) in softball action from Eakes Athletic Fields. The Camels held off RU’s first seventh inning rally, defeating the Highlanders, 4-3 in game one. In game two, with Campbell holding on to a 4-3 lead in the seventh, the Highlanders would plate three runs to pick up the win. Ashleigh Brooks led off with a single and later scoring on a game-tying RBI single by Payton Nash (Woodbridge, Va.). Freshman Stephanie Adams (Pasadena, Md.) came up with the big hit, plating Nash with an RBI double. She would score the insurance run on a throwing error. Brandy Winstead (Nashville, N.C.) picked up the complete game victory for the Highlanders. She gave up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits, while striking out three and not walking a batter. Nash finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored two runs. Radford would jump out to a quick 1-0 lead, as Donita Brady (Virginia Beach, Va.) would score on a wild pitch in the first inning. The Camels struck back quickly, plating three runs, all with two outs, in the bottom half off the first. After Katie Mcadden (Stafford, Va.) retired the first two Campbell batters, the Camels scored a pair of runs off a single and back-to-back triples by Tiffany Moyer and Shannon Obryan. Obryan would later score on a double steal. They would add what proved to be the game-winning run in the fourth when Joy-Lee Richard scored from third on an error. In the top of the seventh, Radford would score a pair of runs on a Brooks’ RBI triple followed by a RBI single by Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va.). The rally would end when Smith was thrown out at third after a single by Nash. Kathy Freaney picked up the win, scattering seven hits, while striking out eight and walking three. McAdden (1-3) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on five hits, striking out two and not walking a batter. The Highlanders will take back to the road this weekend for a tournament at Delaware State. On Friday, they will open up with Bucknell at 10:15 a.m. then play the host at 2:15 p.m. |
