Tennis Splits with Longwood Radford, Va. -- In their final regular season match, Radford’s tennis teams split with Longwood this afternoon from Dedmon Center Courts. The men’s squad won 6-1, while the women fell 6-1. With the win, the men improve to 12-9, while the women fall to 3-11. Longwood’s women improve to 10-5, while their men fall to 7-9. In the men’s match, RU swept all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. In singles play, the Highlanders won five of the six matches to earn the victory. Four of the matches were won in straight sets. At No. 1 and No. 4, Brandon Johnson (Roanoke, Va.) and Andre’ Cavaco (Faro, Portugal) won by identical 6-1, 6-2 scores. Joakim Arhammar (Solletuna, Sweden) and Tyler Eddins (Huntington, W.Va.) also swept their match at No. 3 and 5 respectively. Arthur Vasarevic (Zagreb, Croatia) needed a third set super tiebreaker to defeat Rashko Patnikov. In the closest match of the day, Longwood’s Justin Dorsk downed Ross Harvey (Hillsville, Va.) in three sets 7-6 (5), 5-7, (10-7). On the women’s side, the Lancers took the doubles point by winning the No. 1 and 3 matches. For RU, Cristina Glas (Irun, Spain) and Caroline Downs (Radford, Va.) won the No. 2 double 9-8 (5). Downs earned RU’s lone singles point with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Cecilia Robinson at No 3. The women also had a close contest at No. 4, where RU's Jessica Nixon (Leesburg, Va.) fell in three sets to Amber Miller, 4-6, 7-5, (5-10). The men’s and women’s team will prepare for the Big South Championships to be held from April 15-17 at Winthrop University. Seedings for the tournament will be announced tomorrow.
