Three Highlanders Earn All-Conference Honors

Radford, Va. - Radford University’s Arthur Vasarevic (ZaArthur Vasarevic (courtesy of FOTO International)greb, Croatia) and the doubles team of Robel Mengisteab (Kista, Sweden) and Joakim Arhammar (Sollentuna, Sweden) were named to the 2004 Big South All-Conference Squad, announced at the League’s Tennis Awards Banquet held here Wednesday night at Winthrop University.

Robel Mengisteab (courtesy of FOTO International)Vasarevic, a sophomore, finished the regular season with a 5-1 Big South record and a 20-10 overall record at #2 singles. He was also named to the All-Academic team. Juniors Mengisteab and Arhammar are RU’s No. 3 doubles team that posted a 5-1 Big South record and a 12-6 overall record.

For the women, sophomore Amy Costello (Montclair, Va.) was named to the Big South’s All-Academic team.

The awards, along with Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year, the All-Academic teams and the All-Conference teams, were presented at the annual awards banquet, which precedes the 2004 Big South Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships. The championships get underway Thursday at Winthrop.

The fourth-seeded men’s squad (12-9, 4-2 Big South) will face fifth-seeded Charleston Southern (5-11, 3-4) at 11:30 a.m., while the seventh seeded women’s team (3-11, 1-5 Big South) will take on second-seeded Coastal Carolina (14-5, 6-1) at 2 p.m.
